History of the village

Buckler’s Hard started as a small riverside landing place, but it soon became a busy 18th‑century shipbuilding village. Shipwrights built more than 50 wooden ships here – including some that sailed at the Battle of Trafalgar.

As times changed, the village became quieter, later welcoming holidaymakers and families enjoying the river. During the Second World War, the area helped prepare for the D‑Day landings.

Today, Buckler’s Hard is a peaceful, living village where you can wander, explore, and imagine the stories of the people who once worked along this very riverbank.
