1 April 2014 – Professor Jon Adams from Southampton University’s Maritime Archaeology unit delivers a lesson in bronze age axe heads and tools.
Second day with the apprentices and it is bit foggy down on the river bank but that does not stop us.
First off a lesson on historic tools from Professor Jon Adams from Southampton University’s Maritime Archaeology unit. Bronze age axe heads and tools and a discussion on how the tools developed through the ages.
Then off to work, lots of lessons in how to use an axe and the different types of axes. Plus, sawing old fashioned style with huge long frame and pit saws. Really hard work and as the weather got hotter productivity got a bit slower.
We had a wave of media visit us today. BBC South and ITV Meridian came down to film and interview the students and Henry and myself. All good fun except a bit nerve racking as the reporter wanted to try his hand with an axe and didn’t have hard toe boots on so we had to lend him someone else’s!
