BUCKLER'S HARD SHIPYARD TRUST

A new charitable organisation, the Buckler’s Hard Shipyard Trust, has been created to champion education and heritage projects celebrating the shipbuilding history of Buckler’s Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River.

The Trust’s mission is to bring the story of Buckler’s Hard shipyard to life – from its medieval origins and its renowned 18th‑ and 19th‑century shipbuilding era, to its wartime role, the global journeys of its ships, and the community that once lived and worked there. The aim is to share this heritage in an inspiring, sustainable, and inclusive way, and to preserve it for generations to come.

Archaeological dig

In summer 2025, a team led by the University of Southampton worked to survey and excavate the Slipway 2 area, one of the largest of the five surviving historic slipways. It was a significant structure within the historic shipyard, renowned for the construction of 55 Royal Navy ships during the 18th and early 19th centuries, including many famous 64‑ and 74‑gun warships. Following the success of this excavation, a further phase of archaeological work is planned for summer 2026.

What’s on
