The Art of Buckler's Hard - 16 March - 3 November 2024

March 16, 2024

Please note: The Art of Buckler’s Hard exhibition officially closes on Sunday 3rd November 2024.

In 2024 we opened The Art of Buckler’s Hard, a new exhibition showcasing art from the recent Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year semi-final, as well as paintings from the Montagu family collection.

This free exhibition was located in the Shipyard Office, opposite the Master Builder’s House and opens from 16 March to 3 November 2024.

Seven semi-finalists competed for the Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year title at Buckler’s Hard in July 2023.  They were tasked with capturing the natural charm of Buckler’s Hard, as well as its rich maritime history.

Original pieces were on display in the exhibition.

A selection of artwork from the Montagu Family collection was on display.

Highlights included official Admiralty artist Richard Eurich’s oil painting of a firework display to welcome Sir Francis Chichester’s return in Gipsy Moth IV, as well as watercolour paintings of the High Street by British artists Walter Tyndale and Stanley Orchard.

Marine artist David Bell’s watercolour of HMS Euryalas and HMS Swiftsure on Buckler’s Hard launchways also made an appearance within the exhibition.

Amateur artists and professionals were invited to enter our very own free art competition.

Drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, ceramics and textiles showed the natural beauty of Buckler’s Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River, as well as its maritime past as the village where ships were built for Nelson’s fleet at Trafalgar.

Three winning entries were chosen by Buckler’s Hard Director, the Hon Mary Montagu-Scott, with Lord Montagu and Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year Monica Popham, whose painting of the village helped her to win her title.
