Enjoy a summer visit to Buckler’s Hard

June 8, 2022

With its beautiful scenery, shipbuilding heritage, River Cruise and newly refurbished Captain’s Table café, Buckler’s Hard is an ideal destination for a summer day out, whether you’re simply taking in the view, enjoying a warming cup of coffee with a friend, or diving into the rich history of the village.

Following the changes that took place at Buckler’s Hard last year, the grounds of Buckler’s Hard village, Shipwright’s Cottage, St Mary’s Chapel, and the Captain’s Table are free for everyone to visit.

With the Solent Way footpath running through the village, Buckler’s Hard is a perfect destination for walkers and cyclists alike, just a gentle 2¼ mile walk or cycle from Beaulieu. For those arriving by vehicle, a parking charge applies, which helps to maintain this heritage site. A small admission charge applies for the Buckler’s Hard Museum or River Cruise.

Reconnect with family and friends as you enjoy a day out, with the chance to recharge as you soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this preserved village, its timeless charm making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Step inside the Buckler’s Hard Museum and Visitor Centre to discover remarkable stories from centuries of maritime history, including the heyday of Buckler’s Hard when ships for Nelson’s fleet at Trafalgar were built there. Take a closer look inside the preserved shipwright’s cottage and the Chapel of St Mary’s, with its smugglers’ cellar beside the altar.

Running throughout the summer until 30th October, the River Cruise is a must-see extra to your visit. Giving a close-up view of wildlife along the banks of the beautiful Beaulieu River, the commentary by the boat’s captain shares rich tales of the river’s past, throughout the 30 minute boat trip. Buy your tickets as you board the boat.

For scrumptious food and drink, call in to the recently refurbished Captain’s Table. Drop anchor and refuel, with plenty of food and drink options to choose from. No matter if you’re settling down for a full cooked breakfast or lunch, popping in for a cream tea and a hot drink, or just after a light bite on the go, the Captain’s Table is open daily from 9am.

Plus, if you’re just popping in for a coffee, parking is free for up to 15 minutes, with a small parking charge applying thereafter. The flexible new parking system allows you to relax in the knowledge that you only pay for the time you’re here, whilst helping us maintain this fascinating heritage site. Visitors can pay before leaving by entering their number plate at the onsite pay points, or via the Glide parking app on their smartphone. Cash and card payments are both accepted.
